1. Samsung adjusts its production capacity strategy, prioritizing storage and delaying foundry lines
Samsung will build P4 phase 2/4 and P5 wafer foundry production lines in Pyeongtaek, South Korea
Postponed to 2026, the core reason is that the acquisition of OEM customers is less than expected.
The first phase of Pyeongtaek P4 is about to be put into production and the third phase is under construction, but the focus of resources has shifted to the storage production line; at the same time, priority has been given to promoting the construction of the Taylor wafer fab in Texas, the United States, and the foundry business has shrunk and focused on the main storage business.
2. Intel launches massive cost reduction and plans to sell Altera FPGA business
Intel submitted a cost reduction plan to the board of directors, the core of which includes
Altera sells programmable chip unit(acquired for $16.7 billion in 2015), cutting capital expenditures.
It plans to reduce capital expenditures to US$21.5 billion in 2025 (-17% year-on-year) and divest non-core assets to improve profitability; it does not involve the sale of the foundry business for the time being. Altera may be sold to industry buyers as a whole, and Marvell is considered a potential bidder.
3. Mainland China leads the world in spending on chip equipment, and is expected to exceed US$50 billion for the whole year
SEMI data shows that in the first half of 2024, chip equipment spending in mainland China will reach
$25 billion, exceeding South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States combined, continued high prosperity in July, and is expected to reach US$50 billion for the whole year, setting a new record.
Second-tier fabs conduct centralized procurement to drive equipment demand; leading companies such as Applied Materials, Fanlin, and Kelei
44% of revenue comes from mainland China, becoming the largest single market for global equipment manufacturers.
4. Samsung HBM3E has been certified by NVIDIA and is available in batches for H200 and Blackwell compatibility.
TrendForce confirmed that Samsung
HBM3E has completed NVIDIA validation and shipped 8Hi stack, mainly supplying H200 GPU; Blackwell series verification is progressing simultaneously and is expected to increase in volume in 2025.
About 90% of Nvidia's GPUs in 2024 will be Hopper architecture. In the second half of the year, H100 will maintain high prices and H200 will become the main supplier; Blackwell will drive the growth of TSMC's CoWoS advanced packaging demand.
5. Jinghe integrated production capacity is fully loaded, and the layout of 40/28nm OLED driver chips is accelerated.

Mass production of 28nm products is expected in the first half of 2025。
6. ST invests in RISC-V alliance companies to increase investment in automotive and IoT ecosystems
STMicroelectronics (ST) invests in RISC-V company
Quintauris GmbH, becoming the sixth largest shareholder.
The company was jointly established in 2023 by Bosch, Qualcomm, Infineon, Nordic, and NXP. It focuses on RISC-V architecture solutions for the automotive industry and will subsequently expand to the mobile and Internet of Things markets to promote the implementation of the open source instruction set ecosystem.
